Dhaka, December 26: Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD on Monday proposed formation of a search committee and the new Election Commission (EC) with people believe in the spirit of Liberation War and the fundamental principles of the constitution.
The party, a component of the ruling party Awami League led 14-party alliance, placed the proposal before President Abdul Hamid during a discussion over the formation of new EC at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban.
JASOD president Hasanul Haq Inu, also the information minister, led the party’s 12-member delegation in the discussion.
President Hamid initiated the formal talks with the registered political parties regarding formation of a new EC formation. The tenure of the current Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led EC expires in February next.
During the hour-long meeting, JASOD placed a seven-point proposal over the formation of search committee and EC.
Hasanul Haq Inu said the President’s initiative of holding discussion with the political parties is a time-befitting one and hoped that the President will be able to form a strong EC through discussion.
JASOD also proposed introducing a permanent system for formation of EC.
The party leaders also requested the President to include women in both the search committee and the EC.
During the discussion, President Hamid said the opinion of the JASOD will help in constituting a strong commission.
Mentioning that election is indispensible to a democratic process and hoped that it will be possible to form a strong EC with the help of political parties.
