Dhaka, November 17: The Bangladesh government gave a certificate of proprietorship to Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) recognizing ‘Jamdani’ as a registered geographical indication (GI) product.
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, on behalf of Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) handed over the certificate to BSCIC chairman Mushtak Hasan Muhammad Iftikhar at a programme on Thursday.
Amir Hossain Amu said that Jamdani Sari is an identical product of Bangladesh. The country stepped ahead through the recognition of Jamdani.
“Hilsa, known as `Ilish`, will also get registration as the Geographical Indication (GI) product of Bangladesh,” he added.
Meanwhile, he urged all to work sincerely to protect the rich culture, tradition and historical wealth of Bengali nation.
The GI registration will be instrumental in branding of the Jamdani Sari in the international market, the minister said with the hope that Bangladesh will get benefits in international trade due to the registration.
