Dhaka, August 30: Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh on Tuesday called a dawn-to-dusk countrywide hartal (strike) for Wednesday protesting the Supreme Court (SC) order upholding its leader Mir Quasem Ali’s death penalty.
Jamaat acting Secretary General Dr Shafiqur Rahman, in a statement, announced the strike soon after the SC judgment on Tuesday.
The hartal that will begin at 6:00am and end at 6:00pm is also meant for registering protest against the arrest of its top leaders and demanding the release of those arrested.
The statement read, ambulance, fire-service and hospital vehicles, press and other emergency services will be out of the purview of the shutdown.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, the Supreme Court Appellate Division rejected war criminal Mir Quasem Ali’s review petition against the death penalty upheld by the appellate division of the apex court.
