Dhaka, May 10: The government will execute the verdict anytime if death-row war crimes convict Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami won’t seek presidential clemency, Home Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said on Tuesday.
“Nizami is yet to file mercy petition for presidential clemency so far. So, his execution anytime,” the home minister told reporters at the secretariat.
The jail authority is taking preparation to execute the verdict of the death row war convict Nizami, the minister said.
Replying to a query about execution time, the minister replied, “wait and see.”
The prison authorities have also said that they were ready for the hanging.
The last resort for Nizami to save his neck is now to seek the president’s mercy after admitting his guilt.
“We are waiting to forward Nizami’s mercy petition to the president. And if he does not go for that option, then, as I have said, we are getting prepared. It will happen anytime if he does not seek mercy,” Kamal further said.
“Should he seek clemency, the appeal will go to the president and his orders will be followed.”
A good number of law enforcers including prison guards, police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members were seen deployed in ensuring foolproof security in the jail area.
Apart from this, the members from different intelligence agencies have also been deployed there to avoid any untoward incident as the jail authorities last night received a copy of the Supreme Court judgment that confirmed the death penalty of Nizami, top leader of the infamous Al-Badr Bahini.
