Dhaka, June 15: The High Court on Wednesday upheld the death penalty to 6 people in murder of former Awami League lawmaker Ahsanullah Master.
The death row six convicts are: Nurul Islam Sarkjer, Nurul Islam Dipu, Mahbubur Rahman, Shahidul Islam Situ, Hafiz alias Kana Hafiz and Sohag alias Suruj.
The life imprisonment of 7 others in the case has also been upheld by the court.
Ordered by pro-Jatiya Party Jatiya Chhatra Samaj leader Nurul Islam Dipu, armed men shot and killed Ahsanullah, who was also the president of Jatiya Sramik League, and Omar Faruq Ratan, a young man, and wounded 17 others in May, 2004 in a sudden gunfight that erupted at a biennial conference of Awami Shechchhasebak League in Noagaon near the legislator’s house in Tongi.
On April 16, 2005, a Dhaka court gave death sentences to 22 people and life terms to six others for killing Ahsanullah and also similar punishments to the same convicts for gunning down Ratan.
