HC delivers split verdict on Nizam Hazari’s Parliament membership

Dhaka, December 6: The High Court (HC) on Tuesday delivered a split verdict over the legality of holding the post of lawmaker by Nizam Uddin Hazari, an Awami League (AL) leader in Feni.

A justice of the dual bench said it was illegal while the other justice disagreed.

Senior Justice Md Emdadul Haque handed down the verdict saying that holding MP post for Nizam Hazari is illegal.

However, being disagreed with the verdict, Justice F R M Nazmul Ahsan rejected the rule issued in this connection.

The Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha will send the case to a new single bench.

A petition was filed claiming that Nizam had resorted to forgery to get out of jail early in a criminal case and run in the parliamentary polls on January 5, 2014.

Shakhawat Hossain Bhuiyan, a Jubo League leader of Feni, filed the petition as public interest litigation on June 8, 2014.
