Dhaka, Mar 11: A 30-feet wide street (no-55) in Gulshan circle-2 has caved in on Friday after developing cracks few days ago following alleged pumping of water by a contractor the RAJUK for development works on the lake there.
The police closed the street to traffic.
But RAJUK sources said, the street caved in naturally.
Owner of a seven-storied house besides the street belonging to BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain reported the building developed cracks as well when the street caved in.
He said, the damage to his building was not that serious yet as he could go out. But residents of two of his neighbouring buildings could not go out of their homes fearing further collapse.
Dr Mosharraf, a former Dhaka University Geology teacher blamed the contractor working on the development of the lake for the incident without adequate protection for the road pumping out water leaving the road vulnerable to cave in.
He said, heavy materials were moved in there for the lake development.
Fire Service sources said, they are investigating the incident.
