Foreigners involved behind Mitu killing: Remand hearing on Sunday for Gunno, microbus driver detained

Dhaka, June 9: Foreigners involvement behind the killing of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akhter, police claimed on Thursday.

“Miscreants with the influence of foreigners killed Mitu,” Chief of Counter Terrorism (CT) Unit Monirul Islam said while briefing to reporters at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) media centre.

Unidentified miscreants gunned down Mahmuda Khanam Mitu at the city’s GEC intersection on Sunday morning while she went there to drop her son, Mahir Akhter, 7, for a bus to Chittagong Cantonment Public School and College.

Meanwhile, Detective Branch of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) on Thursday placed the arrested Abu Nasor Gunno on charge of Mahamuda Khanam Mitu murder before the court and sought seven-day remand to quiz him.

However, the court wanted to know on which connection Abu Nasor was arrested and to submit all the documents before the court why he was arrested and kept the remand hearing on Sunday, said the court sources.

Chittagong metropolitan magistrate Abdul Kader passed the order.

“DB sought seven-day remand to quiz Gunno over the murder incident of Mitu. The court wanted to know to the investigation officer on what basis or kind of evidence Gunno was arrested.  In response to the court the investigation officer said Gunno was present in the scene during the murder of Mitu by tracking his mobile number,” said Nirmalendu Bikash Chakraborty, assistant commissioner of police (Prosecution).

However, Devdas Bhattacharya, additional police commissioner (Crime & Operation) of CMP said they have arrested the driver of the black microbus, which followed the motorcycle when the miscreants left the place soon after the murder.

The driver was identified as Jane Alam, 50, hailing from Solimpur Sitakunda of Chittagong.
