Bagerhat, April 14: Fire broke out in the Sundarbans at Chandpai range on Wednesday morning.
M Saidul Islam, divisional forest officer of Sundarbans East Zone, said the fire originated at Abdullah Shila adjacent to Nangli camp around 10:00am.
“Forest workers are trying to douse the flames. Firefighters are yet to reach the spot,’’ Saidul added.
Three weeks ago, a devastating fire gutted forests at Chandpai range areas, what officials said, 1.66 acres of forest land were seriously damaged. Locals, however, claimed the original devastation was through six acres.
This event is the 15th fire incident in the Chandpai range in last 12 years – a trend that is posing a threat to the world’s largest mangrove forest which is also listed as a world heritage site.
