Dhaka, June 1: The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday postponed the elections in all union parishads (UP) at Chittagong’s Banshkhali upazila after the local Awami League MP allegedly beat up a polls official.
The EC has also decided to file a case against lawmaker Mostafizur Rahman Chowdhury for beating Upazila Election Officer Zahid Hossain, Commission’s Secretary Md Sirajul Islam told reporters in the afternoon.
“Polls at Banshkhali Upazila have been postponed due to assaulting election official. The EC has decided to file case against the local parliament member and the district election officer will file the case,” he said.
Election official Zahid alleged that the local MP along with some party leaders beat him at the upozila nirbahi officer’s office for not appointing polling officers as per MP’s choice.
There were schedule to hold polls in 14 UPs under Banshkhali upazila on June 4.
