Dhaka, October 7: Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the Hindus, began with the ‘Bodhon’ ceremony of the Goddess Durga at temples amid religious festivity across Bangladesh on Friday.
Organisers and artisans have made all-out preparations to decorate the temples and mandaps in the befitting manner.
The five-day festival began with Bodhon of the Goddess Durga today marking Sashthi. The Mahasaptami puja will be held tomorrow while Mahashtami, Kumari Puja and Sandhi Puja on the day after tomorrow.
The Mahanabami Puja will be held on Monday and Bijoya Dashami on Tuesday. The ritual and festivity will end with the emersion of the idols of the Goddess Durga in ponds, rivers and other water bodies on the day.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages greeting the members of the Hindu community on the occasion.
Some 29,395 permanent and temporary mandaps have been erected across the country ahead of the occasion. Of those, 229 mandaps have been erected in the capital Dhaka, said Bangladesh Puja Utjapan Parishad.
During the Durga Puja, a festive mood sweeps the country. Beyond the limit of religiosity, it has become a social festivity.
People of Hindu community and others are likely to visit the mandaps to see the tastefully decorated idols of Durga.
The government has taken adequate security measures with deployment of law enforcers to avoid any untoward incident on the occasion.
