Dhaka, December 09: Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor Akhtaruzzaman on Saturday said the polls to Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) would be held soon.“We will take necessary steps to hold polls immediately,” he said.
The VC came up with the assurance while breaking hunger strike of Walid Ashraf, a DU student who has been on hunger strike since November 25 demanding the polls.
DU VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman broke the strike and fed Walid a banana and water on the campus around 12:30pm.
Walid, a student of Social Welfare and Research Institute of DU, earlier declared to continue his strike despite falling ill.
On December 6, he was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the evening as his health condition had deteriorated.
Walid was injected with saline at the DMCH. He, however, returned to Memory Eternal premises immediately afterwards where he had been living in a tent since November 25.
Meanwhile, leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra Maitri expressed their solidarity with Walid.
All the student organisations have so far expressed support for Walid except for Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD).
