Drug-smuggler killed in a gunfight

Joypurthat, June 2: A drug smuggler was killed in a gunfight between his cohorts and members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police at Ratanpur village in Panchbibi upazila on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Tariqul, son of Ayez Uddin, a resident of Chak Shimulia village of the upazila.

The assistant superintendent of police, Ashok Kumar Pal, said a joint team of the border force and police conducted a drive at Shaluar Math in the area when a gang of smugglers, including Tariqul, was staying there at about 4:30am.

Tariqul was caught the line of fire and died on the spot while his associates managed to flee the scene after a brief gunfight with police.

Tariqul was wanted in 11 cases, including for smuggling, with Panchbibi Police Station, the ASP added.
