Themorningbellbd.com desk, June 14: The death toll crossed 144 from Tuesday’s hill-slides at different places in Rangamati, Chittagong, Bandarban and Khagrachhari districts.
Police said bodies of 106 people have been recovered from Rangamati, 28 from Rangunia, three from Chandanaish, six from Bandarban and one from Khagrachhari.
A large number of people died of hillslides trigerred by heavy downpour on Monday midnight to Tuesday. Most of the deaths occured in Rangamati. Hillslides began from 5:00am on Tuesday at different places in Rangamati town which continued till 11:00am. During the six hours, people died in landslides at Vedvedi, Rangapani, Jubo Unnayan, TV Station, Radio Station, Reserve Bazar, Monghar, Shimultoli and Tabalchhari areas. Many people are feared buried under the earth in those areas.
As many as 98 dead bodies were recovered from different places in Rangamati till Tuesday. The victims included two Army officers and two soldiers. They lost their lives while trying to clear the Rangamati-Chittagong Highway which became detached due to massive landslides. Eight more bodies have been recovered from there today (Wednesday).
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Rangamati Prokash Kanti Chowdhury said eight more dead bodies were recovered from Rangamati today. Of them, five bodies including of a mother and a daughter were recovered from Vedvedi area. The mother and daughter were identified as Ponti Sona Chakma, 35 and Shantana Chakma, 9.
On the other hand, three bodies of a family were recovered from Jubo Unnayan area. They were Rupali Chakma, 35, her two daughters–Jui Chakma, 12 and Jhumjhumi Chakma, 7.
Twenty-one people died at Rangunia upazila and three in Chandanaish upazila in Chittagong. Azizur Rahman’s missing wife Quamrunnahar, 45 and daughter Sufia Akhtar, 14 were rescued from Lemujhiri Agapara area in Bandarban at about 2:00pm on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, one person died in landslide in Khagrachhari. Porimol Chakma of Bormachhari union under Lakkhichhari upazila in Khagrachhari district died in landslide after he went out of his house at about 7:00am to bring his cattle. His three cattle also died in landslide.
Lakkhichhari upazila parishad chairman Jyoti Chakma confirmed about the death of Porimol Chakma.
He said seven people injured in landslide were admitted to Lakkhichhari Health Complex.
