Customs intelligence seized a BMW, valued at Tk 3.5 crore, in capital


Dhaka, January 18: A team of Customs intelligence on Tuesday night seized a luxurious ‘BMW X5’ car bearing British number plate from a house at Banani in the city.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Customs intelligence officials went a house dubbed ‘Akash Pradeep,” House No. 46, Road No. 25/A at Banani on Tuesday night and seized the car from the basement.
The market price of the car imported evading duties and misusing the Carnet facilities is Tk 3.5 crore, said the Customs intelligence officials.
They said that there were allegations that the car was plying on roads using a ‘strange number plate.’ Taking the strange number plate into account, the Department of Customs Intelligence decided to launch a drive against the car.
During the seizure, the number plate was found mentioning ‘YF-05PVT.’ It was written on a black plate. The chasis number of the car is WBAFA-12010LW06882, 3000 cc, MFG Year 2005, Black Colour.
It is learnt that the number used by the car  was a British number and the car had been plying on the roads in Dhaka without changing the number.
The Customs Intelligence officials said the car was brought under the ‘Carnet’ facilities in 2011. During the import, the importer cited that the car was used by a person residing in Coventry, UK.
Owner Mohammad Mohsin Alam, who is a freight forwards businessman, now uses the car. He kept the car concealed with a cover in the basement of his house.
