Critically injured Samakal journalist in mayor’s firing dies


Sirajganj, February 3: A journalist, who was critically injured in firing by Shahzadpur municipality mayor Halimul Huque Miru, died on Friday.
The Daily Samakal correspondent Abdul Hakim Shimul died at about 1:40pm when he was being brought to Dhaka from Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra.
Azad Hossain who was accompanying Shimul confirmed about the death of the journalist. He said they returned to Shimul’s village home at Shahzadpur.
On Thursday afternoon, three people including journalist Shimul received bullet injuries when mayor Halimul Huque Miru opened fire from his personal shotgun on the crowd during a clash between two rival groups of local Awami League.
Bullet-ridden critically injured Shimul was later taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra.
Shahzadpur Police Station officer-in-charge Rezaul Huque said the mayor’s brother Hasibul Huque Pintu had beaten Shahzadpur Degree College Chhatra League vice-president Bijoy Sheikh at about 1:30pm on Thursday. Later, Bijoy’s people blockaded the highway. During the blockade, Bijoy’s supporters went toward mayor Halimul Huque’s residence with a procession. When the procession reached near the residence, someone hurled a brick-bat at the mayor’s house. At that time, mayor Halimul Huque opened fire from his shotgun targeting the procession, leaving three people including journalist Shimul bullet injured.
However, contacted, mayor Halimul Huque’s mobile phone was found switched off.
