Dhaka, November 6: A Dhaka court on Sunday acquitted former national cricketer Shahadat Hossain and his wife Nittya Shahadat from housemaid torture case.

The prosecution has failed to prove the allegations brought against the couple.

Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-5 Judge Tanjina Ismail passed the order.

Shahadat and his wife Nityo were present at the courtroom when the verdict was announced.

Earlier on September 6, 2015, Mahfuza Akhter Happy, an 11 years old domestic help of Shahadat’s residence, claimed to be tortured by the couple, was found lying injured on a road at the Sangbadik Colony area of Pallabi in the city.

On September 7, 2015, a journalist named Mojammel Hossain filed a case against Shahadat and Nityo with Mirpur Model Thana under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act 2000.

Police detained Shahadat’s wife from the city’s Malibagh area on October 4, 2015. Shahadat surrendered before the court the following day.

On December 27, 2015, police pressed charges against the couple in the case.
