Coronavirus cases in Bangladesh surge to 12,425, death toll 199 : DGHS


Dhaka, May 07:Bangladesh’s confirmed coronavirus death figure neared 200 on Thursday when the health authorities reported deaths of 13 more COVID-19 patients.

It was the country’s highest single-day death figure. In a press release, the Directorate General of Health Services said four of the deceased are from Dhaka city, three from Dhaka division and four from Chattogram division.

Six of them were aged above 60, four between 51 and 60, two between 41 and 50 and one between 11 and 20. The youngest victim of the day was suffering from cancer as well.

Bangladesh saw another jump in the coronavirus cases as 706 more people tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours till Thursday, taking the total number of infected people to 12,425.“But we’re yet to receive the death toll report. We’ll inform you about the death toll later in a press release,” said Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), in its daily online health bulletin in the afternoon.

In the last 24 hours, coronavirus testing laboratories across the country tested 5,567 samples, she added.

Coronavirus or COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 265, 051 people globally as of Thursday morning.

So far, 1, 301, 725 people have recovered from COVID-19.

Of the currently infected 2, 255, 141 patients, some 2,206,930 are in mild condition, which is 98 percent, according to worldometer.

It said 48, 211 of the currently infected patients are in serious condition and their percentage is only two.

Since it was first reported in China in December last year, coronavirus has infected 3,821,917 people globally, the worldometer data shows.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic on March 11.
