Dhaka, June 10: Children on motorcycles are not allowed, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has announced on Friday.
“This will have to be made mandatory at any cost. No compromise will be made on traveling children on motorbike. It is mandatory to wear helmets while riding motorcycles. He also stressed that more than two people are not allowed on a motorbike,” the minister said while speaking at a meeting of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) in the capital.
“I want to add another thing – children cannot ride motorcycles. Children don’t ride motorcycles in any other country. But here the whole family rides it!” Quader said.
“This is dangerous. We’ll have to show zero tolerance because it’s too risky. We’ll have to implement this strictly throughout Bangladesh,” Quader added.
The announcement comes after an embargo on three riders on motorcycles.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Tuesday ordered police to ensure that three persons are not riding a motorcycle together.
His instruction came a day after three men, riding a motorcycle, stabbed and shot dead a decorated senior police officer’s wife in Chittagong.
