BUET’s first female VC dies in Bangkok

Dhaka, May 24: The first female Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Dr Khaleda Ekram has died at a hospital in Bangkok, Thailand on Tuesday. She was 66.

Khaleda died at Bangkok Hospital around 2:05am Tuesday, said BUET’s Public Relation Officer Shah Alam.

“Mrs Khaleda was flown to Bangkok after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in the middle of this month,” he said

The family members of Khaleda will talk to the BUET authorities and decide regarding how to bring back her body from Thailand.

Khaleda Ekram, a professor of the Department of Architecture of BUET, was appointed as VC of BUET in September, 2014.

She hailed from Bogra district. However, she was brought up in Dhaka. She was also a former student of BUET.

After completing her education, she joined the BUET as a lecturer. Since then she served as a teacher for long 39 years.

Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed their deep shock at the death of Khaleda Ekram.
