Gazipur, July 4: At least nine people were killed and more than 40 others injured when the boiler of a garment factory was exploded here on Monday night.
The boiler was exploded at Multi Fabs Limited’s factory at Nayapara in Kashimpur of Gazipur district at about 7:30pm on Monday, leaving five people dead on the spot.
Receiving information, fire fighting units from nearby Fire Service Stations rushed to the factory and started the rescue operations at 7:45pm. They also recovered five dead bodies from the rubbles. Later, four more persons, who were critically injured in the explosion, died at a local hospital.
Jalal Mia, an employee of the factory, said the boiler of the factory exploded with huge sound at about 7:30pm at the ground floor. At that time, a portion of the factory building collapsed. There were goods and machinery in the collapsed rooms. As the factory was closed in the evening, there were less workers inside the factory.
Gazipur Fire Services’ deputy assistant director Md Akhtaruzzaman admitted of recovering five dead bodies till 8:00pm.
Several fire fighting units from Joydebpur, Savar EPZ, Kaliakoir and Tongi Fire Service Stations went the spot hearing about the explosion.
Md Akhtaruzzaman also said a portion up to the first floor of the four-storied factory building had collapsed in the explosion.
Fire fighters from Joydebpur, Kaliakoir and Tongi Fire Service Stations were conducting the rescue operations. Later, fire fighters from Savar EPZ joined them. With the help of factory staff and locals, the injured were sent to different hospitals and clinics.
