BNP holds rally demanding Khaleda’s release


Dhaka, July 20: BNP on Friday held a protest rally at Nayapaltan in Dhaka demanding unconditional release and better treatment of jailed party chairperson Khaleda Zia.

As part of the countrywide programme, BNP organised the rally in front of its central office.

Leaders and activists of the party from different parts of Dhaka city and adjacent districts gathered at the venue from about 2:00 pm with procession and chanting anti-government slogans.

The protest rally began around 3:00 pm and was presided by BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. “We won’t go for general elections keeping party chairperson in jail,” Fakhrul said.

Additional police was deployed around the rally venue.

Armoured Personnel Carrier, police water cannon vehicles were placed near the spot.

Movement of vehicles on one side of the street in front of BNP central office was closed.

Khaleda was sentenced to five years in jail in a graft case by a special Dhaka judge’s court on February 8 and sent to old Dhaka central jail.
