Dhaka, Jan 24: Altaf Mahmud, president of the pro-Awami League faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), breathed his last at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Sunday morning.
The veteran journalist breathed his last at intensive care unit (ICU) at the hospital at the age of 65.
Brigadier General (Retd) Abdul Majid, director (Hospital) of BSMMU, confirmed the matter to Newsbangladesh.
Altaf Mahmud, a permanent member of the National Press Club, had been suffering from neurological problems and undergoing treatment at the hospital.
He is survived by wife, one son, two daughters and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed profound shock at the death of Altaf Mahmud.
Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman and Quamrul Islam Chowdhury, president and general secretary of the National Press Club, expressed deep shock at the demise of Altaf Mahmud and also conveyed their sympathy to the bereaved family members.
The second namaz-e-janaza of eminent journalist Altaf Mahmud was held on National Press Club premises in city on Sunday afternoon (January 24).
It began around 12:15pm.
Information minister Hasanul Haq Inu, food minister Advocate Qamrul Islam, rail minister Mazibul Hoque, state minister for textile and jute Mirza Azam, PM’s information Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury and information secretary Golam Murtaza, among others, attended the janaza.
Family sources said that the deceased’s body will be brought to his home town Galachipa of Patuakhali district and will be buried beside his father.
The senior journalist has been suffering from neurological problems and admitted to the hospital on January 14.
On January 21, a surgical operation was conducted in the backbone of Altaf Mahmud and then shifted to ICU.
