BB building catches fire


Dhaka, March 23: A fire broke out at 13th floor of the new building of Bangladesh Bank (BB) in the city’s Motijheel area on Thursday night.

The fire originated at the bank at 9:28pm.

Twelve firefighting units are working to douse the fire till filling the report at 10:40pm Thursday night.

When contacted BB deputy governor SK Sur, said he is yet to know the fact behind the fire.

“I am rushing to the spot. Later I can say after assessing the damage,” he said in reply to a query.

There are important documents in the floor 13th and 14th.

Unknown cyber criminals tried to steal nearly $1 billion from the Bangladesh Bank in February, one of the biggest bank frauds ever.

The hackers managed to transfer $81 million via an account at the New York Federal Reserve to four accounts in fake names at a branch of Rizal Commercial Banking Corp in the Philippines.

Most of the money was laundered through Philippine casinos and only about $15 million was recovered from a gaming junket operator and returned to Bangladesh.

A Philippine anti-money laundering agency last month filed charges against five RCBC officials in connection with the theft.
