Dhaka, July 21: Barisal Awami League leader Obaidullah Saju, who filed a defamation case against a UNO for publishing a ‘distorted’ photo of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in an official invitation card, was suspended from the party on Friday.
The action was taken against Saju at a meeting of the AL’s local government election nomination board held at Ganobhaban with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, said AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader while talking to reports after the meeting.
He said Saju, district AL religious affairs secretary, was suspended as he filed the case against upazila nirbahi officer Gazi Tariq Salman overenthusiastically.
The board also decided to serve a show-cause notice on Saju to explain as to why he will not be expelled from the party, Quader said.
Obaidullah Saju, also Barisal Bar Council president, filed a Tk 5-crore defamation suit on June 7 last against Agailjhara UNO Gazi Tariq Salman, now in Barguna Sadar upazila UNO, for publishing the photo of Bangabandhu in invitation card on the occasion of the Independence Day.
The photo, which was drawn by a child in a painting competition organised by the UNO in Agailjhara upazila of Barisal on the occasion of National Children’s Day marking the birthday of Bangabandhu on March 17 was used in the card.
In the meanwhile, he was transferred to Barguna Sadar from Agailjhara.
On July 19 last, a Barisal CMM court sent the UNO to jail after he surrendered before it in compliance with its order and sought bail.
Salman was granted bail on a bond of Tk 10,000 several hours after serving in jail on the day.
Meanwhile, Saju told reporters on Friday that he did not know that the photo of Bangabandhu was drawn by a child.
