AUST teacher held on sexual harassment allegation, police seeks 7-day remand


Dhaka, May 4: Police on Wednesday arrested an assistant proctor of Ahsanullah Science and Technology (AUST) over an allegation of sexual harassment from his resident at city’s Eskaton Garden of Ramna.AUST teacher in court

Officer-in-charge of Kalabagan police station Mohammad Iqbal said, a team of Kalabagan police station arrested Mahfuzur Rashid Ferdous, associate professor of the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE), from his flat at about 2:00am.

Meanwhile, investigation officer SI Shamim Ahmed of Kalabagan police station produced Mahfuzur Rashid Ferdous before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate court and sought seven day remand for AUST teacher.

Police said Asadullah Al Sayem, brother of a victim, filed a case against the teacher with the police station on Tuesday night.

Earlier on April 30, AUST students staged demonstration against the teacher as they alleged that he has been exploiting his position and harassing students sexually for a while.

The authorities found out that Mahfuzur was accountable for the allegation brought against him and therefore he was suspended.AUST teacher detained

The decision came at an emergency meeting in the face of the students’ demand.

Later, the department chairman informed the matter to Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr MM Shafiullah.
