Dhaka, June 30: The authority concerned on Thursday removed Agrani Bank managing director Syed Abdul Hamid from his post for alleging his involvement in a number of loan scams involving Tk 792 crore.
Meanwhile, acting managing director (MD) of the state-owned Agrani Bank Ltd Mizanur Rahman Khan has been arrested hours after he took over charge of the bank.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir issued a letter in this regard.
The central bank governor issued the removal letter on Thursday morning, sources in the BB said.
“We have received the letter for removing the managing director. Immediate action has been taken,” the state-owned bank’s Chairman Zaid Bakht said.
Earlier on Wednesday, Bangladesh bank governor Fazle Kabir approved a BB standing committee recommendation to remove Hamid in line with the article 46 of Bank Company Act 1991.
Hamid, who became Agrani Bank MD in July 2012, was also held responsible for the defaulted loans of Tk 435 crore in the state-owned bank.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the anti-graft body of the country, arrested the top official of the bank on Thursday afternoon.
After removcal of Syed Abdul Hamid, Mizanur Rahman was made the acting MD around noon.
Sources said ACC deputy director Benazir Ahmed arrested Mizanur Rahman in the afternoon for his alleged involvement in “massive irregularities”.
