AG Mahbubey Alam loses battle to Covid-19, PM mourns

Dhaka, Sept 27: Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, who had been suffering from Covid-19, passed away at a hospital in the capital on Sunday evening. He was 71.

The attorney general, who was undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka breathed his last at 7:25pm, confirmed Alam’s son Sumon Mahbub on his facebook post.

He was hospitalised with high fever on September 4 and later tested positive for Covid-19.

The AG was taken to the ICU on September 18.

Mahbubey Alam, a Supreme Court senior lawyer, was appointed as the attorney general on January 13, 2009.

Since then, he had been serving as the state’s chief legal officer.

He also served earlier as additional attorney general from November 15, 1998 to October 4, 2001.

Born at Mouchhamandra village in Louhajang of Munshiganj district on February 17, 1949, he completed his BA (Honours) in political science and MA in public administration from Dhaka University.

He also attained two diplomas in constitutional law, and parliamentary institutions and procedures in 1979 from the Institute of Constitutional and Parliamentary Studies (ICPS) in the Indian capital of New Delhi.

After graduating in law, Alam started practising in the High Court in 1975 and became a lawyer of the Appellate Division in 1980. He was enrolled as a senior Supreme Court lawyer in 1998 and was elected member to the Bangladesh Bar Council in 2004.

He was elected president of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association in 2005-2006 and served as its general secretary in 1993–1994.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.

In a condolence message, she said the nation will always remember the contributions of the former president of the Supreme Court Lawyers Association in the arena of law of the country with gratitude.

“As an eminent jurist, he played his role with great skill in many legal matters of national importance. He was also devoted to his profession righteously which will always remain imitable,” she said.

The Prime Minister prayed for the salvation of his departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.
