Gazipur, June 13: The Anti corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday filed a case against Professor MA Mannan, the suspended mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC), for embezzling about to Tk 49 lakh.
Deputy director of ACC Mohammed Shamsul Alam filed the case ( case no 56) with Joydebpur police station on Monday morning.
Officer-in-charge of Joydebpur police station Khandoker Rezaul Hasan Reza confirmed the news and said the than account officer of GCC Mohammed Golam Kibria was also accused in the case.
They were charged for embezzling Tk 49 lakh one thousand and 848 of poor and Relief fund of the city corporation.
According to the case, mayor Mannan, who is also an advisor to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, and account officer Mohammed Golam Kibria embezzled the money through 999 of fake vouchers from August 18 in 2013 to February 02 in 2015.
ACC official started investigation about the matter in the middle of last year.
The ACC official recommended for filing case after ending the investigation and the ACC headquarters finally approved it on Sunday to file the case.
The alleged accused are charged in the penal code of 409/467/468/471/109, including the Anti-Corruption Act in 1947, section 5 (ii).
The suspended mayor of GCC Mannan is currently in Kashimpur jail in Gazipur after he was arrested on April 15 from Vannara area of Kaliakoir upazila in the district in an arson case.
Later he was temporarily suspended from mayoral post on April 18 by local government ministry.
This was the second suspension order against him while he was first suspended from mayoral post on August 19 in 2015 when a court accepted chargesheet against him in a case of set fire in a bus with Joydebpur police station.
Mayor Mannan was first arrested on February 11 in 2015 from his residence at Baridhara in Dhaka .
A total of22 cases were filed against him in different charges.
He was released from the jail on March 02 after got bail in all of cases. But he was arrested again on April 15 this year.
