A Hindu trader hacked to death in Gaibandha

Gaibandha, May 25: A Hindu businessman was killed by hacking inside his shop in Gaibandha’s Gobindaganj Upazila on Wednesday morning.

The deceased was identified as Debesh Chandra Pramanik, 70.

Police already detained a suspect, 35-year-old Nepen Chandra, over the killing.

According to police, three to four men entered into the shoe store of Pramanik in Upazila’s Mahimaganj bazaar around at 6:30am and killed him.

“They slashed up Debesh’s neck and throat leaving him dead on the spot,” officer-in-charge of Gabindaganj police Md Mozammel Haque said.

“The motive of the murder is not yet clear. Investigations are on to nab the perpetrators,” said OC Haque.

Meanwhile, police of Gaibandha district Ashraful Islam visited the spot.

“We trying to detain the killers,” he told reporters.

The victim’s family claimed that some local drug addicts tried to extort money from Debesh a few days ago and an argument broke out at the shop as he refused to pay up.

His son Debashish said they suspect that the killing was a sequel to that feud.

At least 2-3 people including Nipen were coming out from her husband’s ‘Pramanik Shoe Store’ at around 6:00am, the deceased’s wife Ananda Rani Pramanik told reporters.
