Madaripur, April 1: Seven people received bullet injuries in a clash at Kunia Union Parishad (UP) in Madaripur on Friday, a day after of UP elections.
Clashes broke out between the supporters of two defeated chairman candidates of the ruling Awami League in Madaripur, police said.
“The clash broke out at village Diapara under Kunia union parishad of the Sadar upazila around 12:30pm, leaving seven bullet-ridden and 15 injured,” Sukhdeb Roy, inspector (investigation) of Sadar Police Station, told reporters.
Police said Awami League-nominated candidate Sanwar Hossain and Awami League (Rebel) candidate Shaheb Ali took part in the Kunia union parishad election on Thursday, but both of them were defeated in the polls.
Over the defeat, a strong resentment was prevailing among the supporters of two candidates.
In a sequel to the defeat, supporters of Sanwar Hossain launched an attack on local leader Belayet’s house and looted the valuables. They also set fire to the house. At that time, Belayet’s supporters fired shots on the attackers, leaving 15 people injured and seven bullet-ridden.
The injured were admitted to Madaripur Sadar Hospital in critical condition while the bullet-ridden people were sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
