12 dead, nine missing in Narsingdi boat capsize


Narsingdi, July 23: At least 10 people died and nine others went missing after a crowded trawler capsized in Arial Khan River at Jongli Shibpur under Raipura upazila of the district on Saturday morning.

The deceased were identified as Bibi Majedar Nesa, 80, Yeasin, 6, Jerin, 8, Marzia, 4, mother Maleka Khatun, 50, of Dewaner Char village,  Rakib, 13, Samrat, 8, Rabbi, 6, Jhinuk, 6, Sumaiya, 7 and Shulekha, 60, of Baricha village of the upazila.Narsingdi tragedy

Officer-in-charge of Raipura Police Station Azharul Islam said a trawler with an unspecified number of passengers on board capsized in the river in the area due to excessive load while it was going to Banisar Mazar in the morning.

The boat was carrying 30-40 passengers and capsized around at 11:00am.

Sources said that the over loaded boat was heading towards Goni Shah Shrine and at one stage it capsized.

However, some passengers managed to swim ashore.
