5 to walk gallows for killing ex-tax official Taher


Dhaka, March 8: A Dhaka court on Wednesday awarded death penalty to five persons in a case filed for their involvement in killing former tax commissioner Abu Taher in 2015.

Judge Abdur Rahman Sardar of Dhaka’s speedy trial tribunal-4 handed down the verdict on Wednesday noon penalty in presence of the eight convicts in the courtroom while Rustam is on the run.

The death row five convicts are Md Nasir, driver of the victim, and his four accomplices–Russel Talukder, Md Rustam, Md Amir Hossain and Sohel Rana.

Besides, two other accused–Nur Alam and Masud Mia—were given 10 years’ imprisonment while two female domestic help–Selina and Nurjahan–to one year in the case.

According to the case statement, on March 2, 2015, robbers killed Abu Taher, a former tax commissioner, and looted Tk 45,000 and around 12 tolas of gold ornaments from his house in Rampura area in the capital.
