5 take part in Sholakia attack, AL leader among 4 arrested


Kishoreganj, July 7: Police on Thursday arrested four people including an Awami Leader in connection with hurling bombs on patrolling policemen at Sholakia Eidgah.

According to local police, a team of five terrorists took part in the terrorism incident at Sholakia.
The incident took place near Azimuddin Pilot High School at about 9:15am just before the congregation at Sholakia Eidgah.

At least four people were killed and 12 others injured in the bomb attack.

The deceased were identified as constable Jahirul Islam, constable Ansarul and pedestrian Jharna Rani Bhowmik.

Eight critically injured policemen have been sent to the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka by a helicopter. Their condition was stated to be critical.

Police and RAB surrounded local Awami League leader Abdul Hannan Bhuiyan Babul’s house suspecting the terrorists had taken shelter in the house after bomb attack and firing. Abdul Hannan Bhuiyan Babul was Awami League chairman candidate of Gunadhar union parishad under Karimganj upazila.
Sholakia attacker held
Three people including Babul were also arrested from the house by police. Besides, a terror suspect was arrested from the house. His identity could not be known.

The surrounded house is located near Azimuddin Pilot High School, adjacent to Sholakia Eidgah. Security forces said the attackers took shelter in the house following the terror attack.

When asked to know about surrounding the Awami League leader’s house, Abu Sayem, additional police super of Kishoreganj district said, “We suspect that the terrorists have taken shelter in this house. The owner of this house is an Awami League leader. He has been arrested.”

It may be mentioned that terrorists launched bomb attack on patrolling policemen near Sholakia Eidgah on Thursday morning. At that time, police and terrorists traded firing against each other, leaving four people including constable Jahirul and constable Ansarul dead on the spot. Besides, an attacker was killed in the firing.

Police entered into an alley of the area as police chased them after the attack. Later, incident of exchanging fires took place between the militants and the members of police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

Attackers chopped policemen after they blasted bombs on them, leaving two cops among four killed.

Kishoreganj Additional Superintendent of Police Abu Sayem said the situation was under control of police while the report was published. Though the operation was suspended, additional members of Police, RAB, BGB have been deployed at the spot.
