5 private TV channels denied access to Ganobhaban

Dhaka, July 10: Unofficial embargo imposed on journalists of five private television channels and denied their access to Ganobhaban, the official residence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Security officials at the Ganobhanban barred the journalists when they went to cover the PM’s exchange of pleasantries programme marking Eid-ul-Fitr on Thursday last.

Sources said journalists of the five TV channels–Somoy, Ekattar, Independent, Channel 24 and Jamuna–went back without recording the programme as they were not allowed into the Ganobhaban.

PM’s press secretary Ehsanul Karim told media that he did not know anything about the matter.

No TV channel was served any notification of embargo, he added.

When contacted, officials of four TV channel told they did not get any notification in this regard, but when their journalists went to report on the PM’s Eid greetings programme, security officials stopped them at the entrance of the Ganobhaban.

Different sources said the government was enraged at the TV channels airing the Holey Artisan Bakery attack incident live from Gulshan on July 1.
