Bogra, November 13: Seven people, including five policemen, were killed and five others injured in a head-on collision between a police van and a truck at Mahipur Bazar on Dhaka-Bogra Highway in Sherpur upazila on Sunday morning.
The deceased cops were identified as constables Tara Pranab Roy, Shajahan, Alamgir, Samsul and Sohel.
Of the other deceased sweeper Shyamal was known while the truck driver could not be ascertained immediately.
Of the injured policemen, Sub-Inspector (SI) Moinul Islam and Constable Abu Taher were identified while the others could not be known immediately.
Officer-in-charge of Sherpur police station Khan M Erfan said five policemen were going to Dhaka from Kurigram Police Lines boarding the police van at night.
When it reached Mahipur Bazar, the vehicle collided with a fertilizer-laden truck around 1:00am, leaving the five policemen and two people dead on the spot and five others injured.
SI Ashraf Hossain said a team of nine members of Kurigram District Detective Branch (DB) of Police led by SI Moinul Islam was heading to Police Headquarters in Dhaka by a truck for fetching uniforms. The truck collided with another opposite head fertilizer-laden truck at Mahipur village, leaving six including four cops dead on the spot and six others injured.
On information, a team of Sherpur Police and fire fighters rushed to the spot. They rescued the casualties and took the injured to Bogra Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital where another cop succumbed.
The bodies were taken to Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.
