5 killed as train derails in Tongi; probe committee formed


Tongi, Apr 15: Five people were killed and more than fifty others injured when a Dhaka-bound commuter train coming from Jamalpur derailed at Natun Bazar area of Tongi in Gazipur on Sunday.A 3-member probe committee formed to enquire the accident and asked them to submit reports within three days.

The death toll might be increased.

Primarily, it is being suspected that the incident might have occurred due to signal problem. Station master has remained fugitive since after the incident, the source added.

Meanwhile, Railways Minister Mujibul Haque visited the accident site and said, “A committee has been formed to investigate the incident. Action will be taken after the investigation.”

The injured people were sent to Tongi Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The rail communication of Dhaka with northern region remained suspended since 11.45am following the derailment, said the station master of Tongi.

In this connection, Yeasin Faruk, officer-in-charge of Kamalapur Railway Station, said four people jumped off the train during the derailment and crushed under it.
