Narsingdi, November14: Four people were killed in Narsingdi during a bloody clash between two rival groups of Awami League (AL) on Monday noon.
The deceased were identified as Manik Mia, 40, son of Altaf Hossain, Khokna son of Arab Ali and Mamun, son of Mongal Mia of Amirabad village under Nilokhia Union in Raipura upazila.
At least 35 persons including 5 policemen were also injured.
The incident took place at Gopinathpur, Birgaon, Amirabd and Haripur villages under remote Nilokhia Union in Raipura upazila of the district.
According police, witnesses and medical sources, newly elected Nilokhia UP Chairman Tajul Islam groups led by Sumed Ali, Zakir Hossain and Abdur Rahim with about several thousand lathials (local weapon) with country made weapons attacked former UP Chairman Abdul Haque Sarker’s supporters houses at about 11.30 am for establishing supremacy of the area.
Former chairman group’s supporters tried to resist the rival group. Both groups were involved in attacked and counter attacked. They also chased one another group. Attackers set fire about 8 to 10 houses of former UP chairman supporters.
On information Raipura thana police led by OC Azharul Islam with hundred police forces rushed to the spot and trying to control the area.
At one stage police opened fire and about 10 persons received bullet injuries.
Police said about 30 persons were injured in both groups during bloody clash and one person died on the way to hospital.
Police rescued 20 injured persons and sent them to Narsingdi Zila hospital and Narsingdi sadar hospital for treatment. Hospital authority referred one Shah Jahan Mia to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he died on way to DMCH.
When conducted Altaf Hossain son of deceased Manik Mia said his son was killed by police firing.
All deceased relatives claimed their relatives were killed by police firing.
When conducted Additional Police Super Crime Hasibul Alam, saidt one person was killed by their rival group attack. None was killed by police firing, the police official claimed.
He said police blank fired to bring the situation under control.
At least five policemen including one OC and three SI were injured by villagers.
OC Azharul Islam, SI Asad Mia, Mozammedl Haque, Ziaur Rahman and constable Zillur Rhaman were injured and they are admitted at Narsingdi 100 bed Zila hospital in critical condition.
