Panchagarh, Feb 26: Police arrested three persons with firearms in connection with the killing of the chief priest of a Hindu temple Sri Sri Santo Gourio in Panchagarh between Thursday and early Friday.
Police also recovered two pistols, three magazines, one grenade, three cocktails, three knives and several rounds of bullets under their possession
Three members of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), including the ‘mastermind’ were arrested by police in connection with the killing,Humayun Kabir, Deputy Inspector General (Rangpur range) at a press briefing on Debiganj thana premises on Friday morning.
He, however, declined to disclose the names of the arrested persons.
Humayun Kabir, said five JMB men were directly involved in the killing mission and three of them were arrested in the early hours of Thursday from different parts of Nilphamari and Panchagarh districts.
The two other JMB men who took part in the killing mission would be hunted down soon, he said.
The JMB men carried out the attack in a bid to destabilize the country and create panic among the Hindu community, he added.
With this, a total of six people have been arrested so far in connection with the killing, he said.
Earlier, three people– two suspected members of JMB and a Shibir man– were arrested in connection with the Hindu priest’s murder.
Jageshwar (55), a hindu priest, was slaughtered by some unidentified miscreants, in Karatoa bridge area under Deviganj upazila of the district last week.
The deceased was the priest of Sri Sri Santo Gourio Monastery of the area.
