Feni, Mar 13: A Feni court on Tuesday awarded death penalty to 39 people in a case filed for killing former chairman of Phulgazi upazila Ekramul Haq in the district in 2014.The court also acquitted some 16 accused in the case as they were found innocent.
The district and sessions judge Aminul Haque handed down the verdict after examining the case witnesses and record.
His attackers intercepted the microbus he was on and fired at him from close range before setting the vehicle on fire. They fled the scene only after confirming the death of Ekramul, who was also the president of the local Awami League unit.
The next day his brother, Rezaul Haque Jasim, filed a murder case against BNP leader Minar and 30-35 unidentified people with Feni model police station.
According to the case statement, on May 20, 2014 Ekramul, also former leader of the upazila Awami League, was shot and burnt alive in the broad day light.
Ekramul Haque, 45, was chairman of Phulgazi upazila and also president of the upazila Awami League, died on the spot.
Four of his associates, including a local journalist, were injured when the attackers set Ekramul’s car on fire near Bilashi cinema hall in the town.
Three months later police pressed charges against 56 people, who were indicted by the court in March 2016.
Of the 56 accused, 15 confessed in court while 19 remained absconding, of whom two were among those acquitted on Tuesday. Of the 39 convicts, 22 are behind bars while the rest are still on the run.
One of the key accused, Md Sohel alias Ruti Sohel, was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion in July last year.
