3 Water Board engineers suspended temporarily for alleged corruption in haors

Dhaka, May 2: The government on Tuesday has temporarily been suspended three engineers of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) for their alleged negligence and corruption in construction of haor protection embankments in Sunamganj district.

The Ministry of Water Resources issued a circular in this regard on Tuesday.

The suspended WDB officials are acting chief engineer (North-East region) of BWDB Md Abdul Hye, superintendent engineer (Sylhet) Md Nurul Islam Sarker and executive engineer (Sunamganj) Md Afsar Uddin.

The three engineers were suspended at the directive of Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud on Tuesday.

Sources at the Ministry of Water Resources said that the suspension order would be effective from Tuesday “for the sake of fair investigation into corruption allegation at Sunamganj haor protection embankments.”

It is alleged that the BWDB engineers showed negligence as well as were indulged in corruption in constructing and repairing embankments in haor region, resulting in onrush of hilly water that damaged a vast swathe of areas inundating the paddy fields and fish farms of some of 25 lakh residents in six districts including Sunamganj.

However, they drew Tk 25 crore over the last two years against the allocation of Tk 80 crore. There are allegations that the BWDB engineers were directly involved in payment of the bills of contractors who did not do the construction works at all at the Sunamganj haor protection embankment.
