2nd phase voting in 639 UPs ends amid massive irregularities, rigging and violence


Dhaka, Mar 31: The second phase voting in 639 Union Parishads (UPs) across the country ended on Thursday amid widespread irregularities, ballot rigging and violence.

Vote casting was started from 8:00am and ended at 4:00pm.

Now the concerned polling officials counting ballots immediate after ending of vote casting.

Leaders and workers of ruling Awami League started casting fake votes at different parts of the country several hours after the voting began. Violence broke out when BNP and rebel Awami League candidates tried to resist the vote dacoity.

During the bloody violence, child Shuvo was killed in Keraniganj, while vendor Abdus Sattar was killed in Chanchra under Jessore Sadar upazila and Rafiqul Islam at Shyampur union in Jamalpur district.

Besides, more than 1,000 people including journalists were injured.

At least, 25 chairman candidates boycotted the election due to occupying polling centres, snatching ballot boxes, putting fake votes and election violence.

In Jessore, a mobile court caught a presiding officer and two assistant presiding officers red-handed for putting seal on ‘Boat’ symbol of the ballot papers. They were later handed over to the law enforcers.

In Comilla, cocktails were recovered from the house of an Awami League candidate. Later, his son was arrested by law enforcers.
