Dhaka, July 2: At least two senior police official were killed in gunfight between militants and law enforcers on Friday night at a Spanish restaurant at high-security Gulshan diplomatic zone in Dhaka.
Rabiul Alam, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Detective Branch of police, and Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge Salauddin Ahmed were killed during exchange of firing with militants at Holey Artisan Bakery-cum-Cafe at Road No. 79 of Gulshan-2.
Besides, critically injured additional deputy commissioner Abdul Ahad and additional commissioner Sheikh Maruf Hasan are now undergoing treatment at nearby United Hospital.
Earlier, doctors pronounced Salahuddin dead when he was rushed to the United Hospital at Gulshan 2 in a critical condition. His body has been kept at Emergency Department of United Hospital and the body will be kept in a mortuary for postmortem.
Law enforcers including police, RAB and BGB cordoned off Holey Artisan Bakery and adjoining areas at Road No. 79 of Gulshan 2 near Lakeview Restaurant. RAB’s helicopters are patrolling at the sky over the Holey Artisan Bakery.
Benazir Ahmed, director general of the elite anti-crime force Rapid Action Battalion or RAB, said that security forces were working to save the lives of the people trapped inside. Several foreigners are believed to be among the hostages inside the restaurant.
“Some foreign nationals are being held hostage at gunpoint inside the restaurant,” Monirul Islam, additional commissioner of Bangladesh’s counter terrorism unit, told reporters.
Sumon Reza, a kitchen staff of Holey Artisan Bakery, who managed to escape, said an Argentinian and another Italian are among those held hostage inside the restaurant.
The US and UK embassies in Dhaka have issued alerts for its citizens in and around the Gulshan zone.
