18 High Court judges sworn in virtually

Dhaka, May 30: Permanently appointed eighteen judges, who served as additional justices to the High Court, have sworn in on Saturday virtually.Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain administered the online oath to the judges at 3pm, said Md Saifur Rahman, special officer of Bangladesh Supreme Court.

Justices of both divisions of Bangladesh Supreme Court were present online during the oath taking programme which was led by Registrar General Md Ali Akbar.

Earlier on Friday, the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs issued a gazette notification of appointing 18 additional justices as permanent.

President Abdul Hamid made the appointments after consulting with Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, the notification said.

The appointment will be effective from the day of their swearing-in, according to the gazette notification.

The online court activities including the hearings of bail petitions were introduced during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

A total of 20,938 people secured bail after hearing of 33,287 petitions by virtual courts across the country in 10 days as of Thursday.
