Dhaka, September 5: The High Court on Monday declared illegal the 15 percent income tax imposed by the government on the private universities.
An HC bench comprising Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Bishwadeb Chakrabarty came up with the verdict after hearing 42 writ petitions filed by 41 private universities and a student challenging legality of the government orders.
The court delivered the verdict after scrapping two government orders imposing the 15 percent tax on the private universities. The government issued the orders in 2007 and 2010.
After the verdict, Barrister Shakhawat Hossain, a lawyer for the writ petitioners, private universities need not to pay income tax to the government following the HC verdict.
