11 killed in Chattogram stampede while collecting iftar items


Chattogram, May 14: At least 11 people were killed and 50 others injured as they scrambled to collect iftar items distributed by the management of Kabir Steel and Re-Rolling Mills (KSRM) at Nolua union in Satkania upazila on Monday.Deputy Commissioner of the district Mohammad Elias Hossain said the stampede occurred as hundreds of destitute people crowded there for collecting iftar items ahead of Ramadan, leaving 10 people dead on the spot.

Among the injured, one died at a local hospital.

Satkania upazila nirbahi officer Mobarak Hossain said the incident took place when the KSRM authorities started distributing the iftar items in front of the house of its owner Mohammad Shajahan around 12 pm.

Chattogram Additional Superintendent of Police (South) Emran Bhuiyan said that 30,000 to 40,000 people gathered at the house to collect iftar items ahead of Ramadan.

In addition to the people of different upazilas of Chattogram, people from Cox’s Bazaar district gathered at the place to collect iftar items, he said.

It is primarily believed that the incident took place due to mismanagement, he added.
